Video Guest of the Month: Debby Hughes!

by Nicole Picadura

Happy Wednesday! We are SO excited to share this month’s video guest designer with you – Debby Hughes! We are a huge fan of her lovely cards.  Please welcome Debby!

Hello, its Debby here today and I’m delighted to be Altenew’s video guest for September! For me Altenew really bought to the fore the multi layered stamping style and in particular with their gorgeous florals. In the video below I wanted to attempt what is possibly the most stamp layering I’ve ever tried on one card!

I used the beautiful Remember This set and found it helpful to sketch out first where I wanted the flowers, leaves and buds to be before starting to stamp. I used masking paper to help create the floral grouping and really loved the look of the lined images and was tempted to leave the card without much color at all. However I had the Red Cosmos and Green Fields packs of inks that I was keen to try out. Usually I spend a while when stamp layering to work out which ink colors go together well so I’m delighted that someone has done all the hard work for me to create these handy packs of inks that all work wonderfully together.

I stamped multiples of this card as accidents happen and it doesn’t take much to get an ink smudge of forget to put a mask in place (yes both of those things happened LOL). However, by stamping multiples then you’ve already got a back up and the less than perfect versions can be used to die cut from, such as the tag I die cut from one of my mistakes.

Well, this card certainly tested my stamp layering and masking abilities LOL, but I love the result of all those layers of color popping of a white background.

I have not been so lucky with the multi stamping so you ideas will help me – make multiples and use acetate to avoid messing up your work. Thanks for sharing.

Your techniques are really good. The acetate to protect the card from smudges is wonderful! It’s a lovely card. I liked the idea of stamping multiples while you have your Misti set up….interesting way to manage those pesky magnets with the tape around them to help picking them up. Very nice video. Thanks

Debby Hughes September 16, 2016 - 02:55

I saw others with the masking tape on the magnets but didn’t get around to doing it …. until i managed to snap them together and one broke :( So I quickly wrapped masking tape around my others :D

Love the card and your idea of keeping working on multiples but I would also love to know where you got that box for your sequins. It is perfect! My sequins are everywhere and that seems to have individual boxes within so they are not going everywhere! Would love to know who makes it or where I could get one! Thank you!

You can usually get them at Joann. Michaels’s and even at a sport tackle shop where they might be less expensive!

I got mine from Simon Says Stamp and they are so useful for corralling all the colors. The great thing about them is that each row can be popped out to take with you if you are out and about.

Thanks for your wonderful video and explanation. I too, forget to clean off my stamps sometimes between layers, so I am happy that I am not the only one. Fabulous card, by the way.

Shhh, I rarely clean my stamps! I find they stamp better that way :D
