Partial Stenciling in Two Ways

by Virginia Lu

Hello, Altenew friends! This is Virginia here. I don’t know about you, but I am PARTIAL to stencils! The awesome Feathered Leaves Stencil is highlighted in my two projects here. Stencils provide really cool and unique touches and background to any designs. Better yet, they are rather inexpensive and easy to store.

Let’s get to the first project with Build-A-Flower: Hyacinth! First, I positioned the Feathered Leaves Stencil at the corner and applied Green Valley Oval Set from the darkest to the lightest.

Altenew-Hyasinth-Virginia#1The key is to apply the ink in one direction (from the bottom and then upward). There are no fancy sponges or special ink applicator required. You will then come up with a unique partial stenciled background.

Altenew-Hyasinth-Virginia#2For the sentiment, I decided to stamp it on the side with Leaf Medallion Stamp Set as it fits quite nicely in this.

The hyacinth was stamped and colored with the Watercolor Brush Markers. After popping up the hyacinth, I added strings and Enamel Dots for embellishments.

My 2nd project took the same approach, but with a different direction.

Altenew-BAF-Cattleya-Virginia#2This time, I took an extra step with the partial stenciling. To show only the upper part of the stenciling, I traced the stencil and cut out the upper portion off. I then applied ink with the lower portion covered with the DIY mask.

Altenew-BAF-Cattleya-Virginia#3This ensured the stenciled elements are defined and well-contrasted with the background.

Altenew-BAF-Cattleya-Virginia#1The Build-A-Flower: Cattleya was colored with Artist Markers. I stamped the sentiment (from Wonderland Stamp Set) in Silver Lake Crisp Dye Ink and kept it very subtle.

Altenew-BAF-Cattleya-Hyasinth-Virginia#1I hope that you like my partial stenciling technique and perhaps you can take your stencil out and give it a go. Thank you so much for stopping by!

So beautiful, Virginia! You’ve added such interest to already gorgeous designs with that stencil! [There is no doubt I’ve missed the boat by not buying this Hyacinth!] xx

What a cool technique. Feel a little silly that all these years and never thought of doing that with a full stencil on a card. Have done it on my mixed media,Haha! Thank you for sharing and inspiring.
